MM Foundations Assignment: Editing a Video for An Audience

Assignment: Use the footage provided for you and edit a 90 second promo video for Dr. Eric Hansen's other passion: flying a stunt plane with smoke and pyro!

You may work in partners, but if you do, you must create 2 versions, 1 each!

Due: Friday, October 22 by the end of the day.

Outcomes. Students will:

- pay attention to the the technical and creative aspects of the work; e.g., quality, uniqueness
- identify and describe key characteristics of each type of media (what  makes a great promo?)
- identify copyright restrictions and permissions and put them into practice (what are current Canadian Laws about copyright and ‘borrowing’ music).
- create a design with a message and display the message, ensuring that the layout is suitable (order of the clips)
- create a design with a message and display the message, ensuring that the image or audio is appropriate (choice of clips, use of sound)

Assessment

On class this Thursday we will discuss as a class the different ways we will be assessing your skills and competencies for this project. I am looking for ideas for informal and formal ways of assessing the project. Some ideas I have:

- Quick check for understanding quizzes (3)

- Personal reflections

- Demonstrations of skills for me

- Checklist for the final project

- Tracking sheet of Peer feedback for what is awesome and what needs to change

- Final Project with accompanying evidence identified from students

- Mr. Nichol assessing based on class developed rubric

Skills/Knowledge For Success
1. An edit makes reference to a point where 1 clip changes to another clip/angle. Watch a TV show and count how many edits there are in it. How many did you count? This give you an idea that there needs to be many edits in your final video. In the 90 seconds there should be at least 20 edits.

2. Scrubbing is the process of skimming through clips to select the section you want.
3. Edit on audio- a style of editing where your use audio cues to guide your editing. Very common in music videos and up beat videos of this style.
4Rule of thirds- Take a few minutes to read the Rule of Thirds from wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_of_thirds
5Canadian Copyright Laws- Why do we need to use our own music? Read and consider these articles. There will be a blog post for you to write about copyright laws with your opinion of the issue.

6. Final Cut Overview. Watch this video on Youtube with an overview of the Final Cut interface. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCGGEQsbtPE
7. In/Out Points- using the “i” and “oh” keys you can select a section of a clip from a larger clip and then place this selection in your sequence.
8. Browser, Viewer, Canvas, Sequence- KNOW THESE!
9. Overwrite, Insert Edits- know the difference. Overwrite does exactly that. It WILL overwrite the clips that you already have in the timeline, Insert will push existing clips down depending on where the playline is in your sequence.

Readings- Yes, there are readings for you to do while I am away. I will give you quick check for understanding quizzes on each of these readings.

1.. http://www.cybercollege.com/tvp009.htm Module 9A part I and II. Video standards. Take the quick quizzes to be sure you know the stuff!
2. http://www.cybercollege.com/tvp023.htm Module 23 and 24. Composition. Take the quick quizzes to be sure you know the stuff!

Completing The Project
1. This project needs 2 things- great music and TONS of quick edits. Start with the music. Make it upbeat and fast to match the speed of the planes. Use Aviary for this!

2. Create your music in Aviary, then download the mp3. Watch the video below on how to do this. After you start editing you may decide to go back and change the music.

Need music? Aviary won't work for you? Right click on the mp3 link here and choose 'download as' and save it onto the desktop to import into Final Cut.

3. Import the footage onto your computer. This is in a Folder called “Flight” on your desktop. If the folder is not easy to see on the desktop, click on the magnifying glass and type in the folder name. You can also do a shortcut to this by holding down the command button and pressing “F” then searching for "Flight". The folder is over 8GB! There’s a lot of footage!
4. Importing into Final Cut is easy! Click on Final Cut. Create a new project. Call the project “yourname_stuntplane”. Create a new project from the File menu. Click Import>Files> From Folder. Here’s a video to show you how to do this.

5. Use the J, K, L buttons to scrub through a clip. To watch a clip in the viewer, double click on it.

6. Import your mp3 into the project and get your music into the sequence two ways. Dragging into the canvas and the sequence. Watch this video about how to import the mp3 and put the music into the sequence.

7. Now double click on the clip called ICAS Team Rocket Demo.  This is the actual demo that I edited with Mr. Farrell that was submitted by Dr. Hansen for his application to fly at an airshow. Notice how quickly the clips change. These are called edits. Count how many edits there are in the first 30 seconds of the clip. I counted 14 or 15! That's an edit every 2 seconds!! The edits are fast to match the pace of the video.

8. Editing on the beat of the music- Markers are created by pressing M  while in the sequence. Use SHIFT>M and OPTION>M to go through your clips.

9. Creating IN points and OUT points for your clips. Watch how to do overwrite and insert edits in this video from your clip selections using I and O on the keyboard. Here's an approach to searching through all the clips and picking the best of the best. Remeber, you can always delete something out of the Sequence without doing any harm to the original clips! Use Command>Z a TON to undo things!

Things to remember:

- don't forget to disconnect your audio a1 and a2 on the timeline patch panel or you will be importing the audio from the plane clips over top of your Aviary mp3 audio.

- Use Command-Z alot!

- email Mr. Nichol for help after you've asked around. Many people in the class have Final Cut experience.

Note- A minimum of 30 edits are required for this project.

10. Select your clips to include two thirds during the day and one third in the night. Here are two videos that will help you with working on the project:

11. Think you're ready for an advanced editing technique? Try this one where you need to replace a clip in the middle of your sequence. If you get this and can show me how you did it, then I'll buy you Timbits!

12. Add a 10 second title at the end. It must contain:

Team Rocket

Eric Hansen &Ken Fowler

rocketaerobatics.com

Booths 320/322

video created by: Your Name, MM2010

Watch this video showing you how to create simple titles in Final Cut. If you have time and ask me I'll be happy to show you Livetype!

Here is a sample of an editing copy that was done by myself and Mr. Farrell with just night footage.
