PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY SO YOU HAVE ALL OF YOUR TASKS COMPLETED

We have a busy week ahead of us. This is the week where we transition from Ideation to Experimentation!

ASSESSMENT

1. How will you be assessed? Like you last project you will have a series of tasks/challenges to complete. To show me that your work is ready to be evaluated you need to have all of your tasks/challenges complete. I will then take your blogs, your presentations, final project, my observations, and a team meeting with me to assess your work based on the 6 outcomes from this module on the rubric found below. Take time to read over the project checklist, rubric and the specific outcomes you need to demonstrate your knowledge and skills of in order to receive your final module mark.

DES1020- The Design Process

1. Identify the steps in the design process

2. Apply the steps in the design process through production of a designed solution

3. Present a portfolio ready drawing, rendering or model that the student produced

4. Identify Copyright restrictions and permissions and put them into place

5. Apply consistent and appropriate workstation routines

6. Demonstrate fundamental communication, management and teamwork skills

THINKING OUTSIDE THE CLASS

As you work on this project think about the effort you put into it. This is a very public project. Knowing what is out there for products, what is the acceptable standard for the products you are going to design. Think about:

- Which stories would you like to hear people who attended the craft fair tell?

- What would a report on the school website say?

- What would you tell the school’s administration in order to receive more funding to design more products?

- What would you like to hear a student in the school say about your idea and your work?

These questions will come up later when you are goal setting and defining success.

Task List/Challenge List

a. Create a team blog at blogger.com. Come up with a catchy and creative team name. Mr. Nichol's might be "Wooden Nickel Designs" so his blog would be woodennickel_designs.blogspot.com

b. Take pictures of all your work, your group at work, your prototypes, screen shots of your designs, your final products. TAKE TONS OF PICTURES!

c. Discovery/Interpretation Blog- tell us about what you know about your audience and how this is influencing what you are making this unit. What are your initial ideas for a product? What is out there in the market? Share 5 examples of products like the one you are thinking of designing. TAKE TONS OF PICTURES!

d. IDEATION- Blog about your first ideas. Share sketches, initial designs from inkscape. Take screen shots of your work. Take pictures of your team in action. TAKE TONS OF PICTURES!

e. Present progress to the class. 5 min presentation.

f. EXPERIMENTATION. 2 blogs. This is where the fun begins! Show your prototypes! Show what you learned from making a prototype. Share the feedback you recieved from others in the class and outside the class.TAKE TONS OF PICTURES!

g. Present Prototypes to the class. Get feedback from them. You might use prompts like:

» What did participants value the most?

» What got them excited?

» What would convince them about the idea?

» Which parts would participants like to improve?

» What did not work?

» What needs further investigation?

h. EVOLUTION 1- Show how you took your prototypes home and into the community and get feedback from there! Share this feedback in your posts. Then show how you used this feedback to change your product. Share the new designs with us on your blog. Write a second blog detailing how you are going to package and price your product. Show evidence that you have researched packaging products.

i. Present Packaging and Pricing to the class. Get feedback from the community and analyze and change packaging as needed.

j. Blog: Setting goals for success. As a group define what success is going to be. Some ideas to help frame this:

- Which stories would you like to hear people who attended the craft fair tell?

- What would a report on the school website say?

- What would you tell the school’s administration in order to receive more funding to design more products?

- What would you like to hear a student in the school say about your idea and your work?

Write down what kind of impact you are looking for. Share that on your blog!

k. EVOLUTION 2- POST CRAFT SALE BLOG. SUMMARIZE your learning. Show what you have learned from the sale, what you would do next time. What would be the next steps for your product? Did your group meet it's goals for success and learning? Does everyone on the team have a strong grasp of the outcomes we have been focusing on from the beginning of the module? Have each person write a personal blog post about this. Be sure to show how you have individually and as a group demonstrated the outcomes.

DES1020- The Design Process

1. Identify the steps in the design process

2. Apply the steps in the design process through production of a designed solution

3. Present a portfolio ready drawing, rendering or model that the student produced

4. Identify Copyright restrictions and permissions and put them into place

5. Apply consistent and appropriate workstation routines

6. Demonstrate fundamental communication, management and teamwork skills

I can't wait to see what this class creates!

Product Design and Development Project

Technology and Design, Fall 2012
Mr. Nichol

Start Date: October 19, 2012
End Date: November 17, 2012

Overview
Students will design a product that would be suitable for a craft fair in our area. Students will take their product from initial idea through many development phases and bring their product to a flea market style craft sale in our community.

Team Dynamics and Working Together
1. Teams will consist of 2 people.
2. Giving updates to the whole class and Mr. Nichol at quick ‘tailgate’ meeting will be crucial
3. Setting out tasks. You may break your team into smaller teams to work on different aspects of your product’s development.
4. Timelines/use of calendars for planning.

At the end of the unit each of you will write a report on your blog incorporating and summary of your project and write about how you have demonstrated each of these outcomes. You will then be assigned a grade based on an assessment rubric that you will have at the beginning of the project. It is possible to cruise along with a group and not be able to communicate your understanding of the concepts and outcomes so each person must be an integral part of the product developement team.

The Process

We will use the design process on an accelerated timeline to bring our products to market.

Team BLOG- teamname_design.blogspot.com  KEEP IT CLEAN!

1. Discovery- I have a new challenge, how do I approach it?
Interpretation- I learned something, now what do I interpret it?
(3 days)

What is out there in the market?

2. Ideation- I see an opportunity, what do I create? Brainstorming, sketching, designing. Share your sketches and ideas with the whole class in 1 minute prezi.
(2-5 days)

How does this product meet the needs of consumers?

3. Experimentation- I have an idea, how to I build it? Build to think, Prototyping, testing, more prototyping! Share your prototypes and get feedback on your ideas from the whole class.
(5 days)

How can we design the product to our customers' specifications? Show how you have taken your detailed plans and notes and made them into your actual prototypes.

4. Evolution-  I’ve tried something new, how do I evolve it? What needs to change? Can I make an off shoot product? How quickly can I produce and get my product ready for market?
(5 days) Present your final products and what you see for the future development of them.

What development remains? How is the product going to look when sold?

Some things to Consider

The Audience
Careful consideration the target market of craft sales is necessary. Start researching this ASAP and find out who typically comes to a craft sale such as this.

Recycle, Recycle, Recycle
If you have an idea to take materials or items from around the house (that you have permission to donate) and your family doesn’t want it there, take a picture of it and share that photo with your class. Maybe someone can refurbish it or laser etch it to give it new life!

Cost of Materials and Manufacturing Time
We are looking for the lowest cost of materials possible, all the while maintaining  a profit margins that will make the creation of materials feasible. You will be responsible for costing out materials. Time is also a huge consideration. Time invested in design, time to prototype and now you need time to manufacture. How can you maximize your profits by optimizing your time?

Presentation/Packaging/Pricing
What can help sell your product? How can we display it/package it?

Document and Keeping track of your learning.
Every 2 days your team must share your progress. This will be done on a blog. Never before has your learning and communicating what your team is up to been so important. We found this with our last sign project. If you sit by and don’t communicate with others, you end up duplicating efforts needlessly. Take tons of pics with your cell phones! These can be put into your teams blog. The blog is where I am going to evaluate your team as a group and your contributions individually.

What Else?
